Waxhaw, July 8 -- Green Austin, lacking a few weeks of being 98 years of age, and the oldest Confederate veteran in Union county, died Friday at the home of his nephew, Lee M. Austin, three miles from Waxhaw.
His death leaves but 15 Confederate soldiers in the county which gave such an overwhelming number of its men to the cause.
Funeral services were held at the King Street Baptist church at Waxhaw this morning at 11 o'clock, with Rev. C. C. Burrus, pastor, officiating. He was assisted by Rev. A. L. Latham, pastor of the Methodist church, and Major W. C. Heath, of Monroe. Several of the oldest veterans in the county attended and were referred to several times in the course of the talk made by Major Heath. Mr. Austin was a Jackson volunteer and went all through the Civil war. He was wounded at Gettysburg and has always enjoyed relating his experiences in this battle. He attended many of the Confederate reunions.
Mr. Austin is survived by one brother, Mark N. Austin, of Monroe, and one sister, Mrs. E. G. Yarbrough, of the Rehobeth community.
