Twin brother of John Palmer Reese. He was the son of Reverend James Reese and Rebecca (Smith) Reese. He was an ordained Baptist minister despite his lack of a formal education as well as a prominent writer and singer of Sacred Harp music. His ministry covered almost seventy years at churches throughout Georgia. In 1857, he married Amanda Brawner and this union produced one daughter. In 1865, he married a widow, Martha Jane (Leavell) Brooks, and there were seven children born of this union. He was also a teacher of Sacred Harp music according to the Baptist Biography (1920).
