US Congressman. A member of the Democratic Party, he represented Indiana's 11th district for five consecutive terms from March 1907 until March 1917. Born and raised on a farm, he attended the Northern Indiana Law School at Valparaiso, Indiana, graduated in 1902, admitted to the bar, and began practicing law in Marion, Indiana. In 1906 he was elected to the US House of Representatives on the Democratic ticket, defeating the Republican 2-term incumbent Frederick Landis. In 1916 he ran unsuccessfully for a sixth term and was defeated by Republican Milton Kraus. After his fifth term expired, he returned home to his law practice and also engaged in several business and local civic efforts. He died at the age of 64.
