"YES, INDEED, STYLES DO CHANGE IN EVEN THE WAY NURSES WEAR CAPS
... The student nurse when she receives her cap at the end of her six months' probationary period knows that she is well on the way to success. And the subject of the cap itself is one of interest to all women, for here too the changes of style have left their effect. This was explained last week at the traditional capping ceremony held at the San Joaquin General Hospital School of Nursing by Mrs. Leolla Allen, R.N. president of the alumnae association of the school. The true origin of the cap, she pointed out, is not known, but there are many opinions. It has been suggested it originated in the habit worn by the Sisters of Charity of St. Vincent de Paul who established the first modern school of nursing in Paris in 1864. Continuing, Mrs. Allen said; Another opinon is that an influence was exerted by the stiff white cap worn by the women trained as nurses at the Institute of Protestant Deaconesses founded by Pastor Theodore Fliedner. Others have suggested it was for keep the hair in place. But every lady in Florence Nightingales's time wore a cap indoors. This possibly is the real reason 'Why a Cap.' At any rate the nursing cap has become a definite tradition of today's training school. Most caps have an individuality that makes it possible to identify the training school of each graduate who wears one, and the history behind each is as varied as the designs themselves. ... "
