HAZEL SPEVACEK
(1917 - 2008)

On Oct. 11, 2008, Hazel Spevacek completed her journey here on earth.

She was born in Sheboygan on the first day of winter 1917, to Amelia and Otto Willmite, Hazel prevailed in a life that presented her with many challenges. Her impoverished youth created a strong woman, who raised four sons and gave refuge to numerous foster children.

She loved living and working with her husband on the family farm in rural Manitowoc County. Her garden was always large, and her dinner table always brimming with tasty food she lovingly raised and prepared for family and friends.

Her poppy seed patch and the resulting kolaches are remembered by many. Hazel was a woman of faith and principal with an abiding sense of fairness, justice and acceptance of those of differing backgrounds and races. She lived by the belief that "if you can't say something good about someone, say nothing at all".

Having been judged often as a child she chose not to be judgmental as an adult.

However, having faced hunger as a child, she did have strong opinions about how one should leave their plate at the dinner table, often to the chagrin of her granddaughters.
Farming in the 60s saw the beginning of the end for the small family farm and with it came economic hard times which Hazel met with strength and resolve, often taking on part-time factory work to pay debts, and to make sure her sons received a proper education. After a full day of work in the barn and field, she would travel to Manitowoc to work the night shift at Mirro Aluminum or Normington Cleaners.

She was greatly missed at many supper tables in those years. She stood by her husband, Stanley, through thick and thin for 66 years, spending the last few years together with the wonderful support and community of their neighbors at Bayview Manor on Green Bay's east side.

She was blessed with nine beautiful granddaughters and 19 great-grandchildren, whom she loved to shower with modest gifts found at the garage sales she loved to frequent. She is also survived by her four sons: Glenn (Kathy), Dennis (Debbie), and Randy Spevacek of Green Bay, and Kirby (Charity) Spevacek of Avondale, Ariz. Hazel was preceded in death by an infant daughter: Geraldine; her husband: Stanley, whom she missed dearly; and a daughter-in-law: Audrey.

Hazel's choice was to be cremated. Her ashes will be spread on family property next to Stanley's, under a big oak tree near the river she loved to fish in the town of Gibson.

Hazel was a member of Messiah Lutheran in Green Bay, where a memorial service is being planned. Time and date to be announced in the future.

Malcore (East) Funeral Home, Green Bay, (920-432-5579), is assisting the family.
