Stacy Edward Churchwell was born on September 11, 1932, near Bear Creek in Leakesville, MS, to George Franklin Churchwell, Sr., and Lucy Churchwell. He died in Rockledge, FL, on July 20, 2021.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his brothers, Hillery L. and George F., Jr., and his sister, Mona Castillow. He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Dorothy, daughter of the late Harold and Sibyl (Pool) Bean, of Merritt Island; son, Marcus (Gail) of Rockledge; daughter, Jana Churchwell Scott (Craig) of Rocky Mount, NC; granddaughters, Krista Churchwell of Orlando, and Sarah Churchwell of Tallahassee; brother, James T. "Jim" Churchwell of Sanford, NC; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

He attended school in Leakesville and graduated from Leakesville High School in 1950. Following graduation, he spent four years in the United States Navy. Subsequent to boot camp, he was assigned to serve with his older brother Hillery on the USS E. A. Greene. He then served on the USS Zellars, and was eventually given duty in Argentia, Newfoundland, from whence he was sent to Boston, MA, for discharge in 1954.

He attended the University of Texas for a semester and transferred to Mississippi Southern College (now the University of Southern Mississippi), where he received a bachelor's degree in chemistry and mathematics in 1957.

Subsequent to college, his first job was with International Paper Company in Moss Point, MS, after which he was employed by Frontier Chemical Company in Wichita, KS. He then took the job of plant chemist at the U. S. Government's helium production plant in Otis, KS. From there, he moved to Amarillo, TX, as a research chemist for the U. S. Bureau of Mines' Helium Activity.

In 1968, he transferred to a job with the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) at the John F. Kennedy Space Center in Florida, where he worked on the Apollo and Space Shuttle programs, until he retired in 1997. He supported and watched the launch of all the moon-landing missions, and he was privileged to watch the launch of the first Space Shuttle and, as part of the support team, fly to California to see it land.

Stacy has a large extended family, which includes 73 first cousins and hundreds of more distant cousins, and in the 1970s, he became interested in genealogy. From that time forward, he enjoyed keeping detailed records and stories of family members, their histories and photographs, and of other Greene County families about whom he had gathered information (although it might be hard to find anyone there who isn't related to him in one way or another).

At family reunion time, and again for the Fourth of July, he would pack the whole family into the minivan and head to Leakesville. While there, he would take advantage of the occasion to talk to as many family and friends as he could, not only out of a sincere interest in knowing others, but also to aid in documenting as many details as possible about the family history and genealogy. Having written down every story and publishing several family genealogy books, he made it possible that these remembrances could be passed on to future generations.

Stacy was always thinking of others before himself, lending a helping hand to anyone who needed it. He will be greatly missed by all those who knew and loved him.

A visitation for Stacy will be held Thursday, July 29, 2021 from 11:30 AM to 12:30 PM at Wylie-Baxley Funeral Home, 1360 N Courtenay Pkwy, Merritt Island, FL 32953, followed by a Celebration of Life at 12:30 PM. Burial at Cape Canaveral National Cemetery.
