MRS. ELIZABETH CHESHIRE.
It is with regret that we have to record the demise of another old and respected resident of the Manning in the person of Mrs. Elizabeth Cheshire, whose death occurred at her residence Albert Lane and Commerce-street, Taree, on Monday last, at 6am.
The deceased, who was 78 years of age arrived in Australia with her husband (the late Mr. Richard Cheshire) in 1857. They journeyed from England in the ship John Bunyan, which was caught in the memorable gale of August 20th 1857, in which the ill fated Dunbar was wrecked at South Head. The gale was also responsible for other shipping disasters, and the passengers on the John Bunyan actually witnessed one ship go down with all hands in the terrible tempest. Shortly after their arrival in Sydney Mr. and Mrs. Cheshire came to the Manning where they settled at Redbank. Here they resided for some eight or nine years until they decided to remove to Taree, where the late Mr. Cheshire was employed for many years, he pre -deceased his wife some eight years ago. After her husbands death, Mrs. Cheshire lived quietly and was a general favorite with all who knew her. About nine months ago she became ill and medical aid was secured, but from the first the doctor could not hold out any hope for her ultimate recovery. Twice during this period she was admitted to the M.D.R Hospital and though she had every care and attention her case was recognised as hopeless and each time she was discharged relieved. For weeks she was confined to her room and could take but very little food. On Monday morning however, in the presence of her son Alfred she passed peacefully away as stated, the cause of death being senile decay. Deceased leaves four sons and one daughter to mourn their loss, these being:— Mrs. F. Brown (Sydney), Messrs. Richard (Victoria). William and Harry (Taree) and Alfred (Avalon). There are 15 grandchildren. The funeral was to have left her late residence yesterday (Tuesday) at 2 p.m. for the Dawson Cemetery, and Canon Phillips was to officiate at the graveside. We extend our sympathy to the bereaved.
