The daughter of Josiah Coryton grew up in Alexandria. Her father, a clock-maker, had a home built at 522 King Street. Ann married Thomas Wells Childs in 1819 at Alexandria. Tom Childs went on to be a Brigadier General who fought the Seminoles before becoming an artillery hero in the Mexican War. After that war he was placed in command of Fort McHenry in Baltimore, then in charge of military operations in Florida. Ann and Tom had many children, some of whom died young.
