Margaret A. King d/o George Washington & Elizabeth (Dickey) King. Margaret attended Carmel Presbyterian Church in Terrepin Creek Valley, Spring Garden, Cherokee Co., AL. Married John A. Thornton, Jan. 22, 1842. (I have found no documents that have John A. Thornton or Margaret A. King's middle names). However, she has been given the middle name of Adeline by researchers. John & Margaret lived on a farm in Spring Garden. 9 of their 10 children were born there, James Alexander, Elizabeth Jane, Nancy Ann, Lucinda Melissa E., Geo. Washington, Martha Charlottey (b. & d. 1853), Wm. Pinkney, Mary Katherine & Eliza Adeline. Son, John Luke S. was b. in AR. In late 1860 the Thornton family along with Margaret's bro. Leander G. R. King & his family, started on the long journey to Bradley Co., AR. Arriving January of 1861. They lived in or around the community of Gravelridge. Tho the exact year is not certain, perhaps 1863/64, however it is a fact, a group of Graybacks come around forcing men to join the Confederate Army. They took John who was a sick man with Brights Disease. The story goes, family rec'd word their father was very sick. Children, Elizabeth & George went to see him. By the time they arrived their father was dead & buried. He died July 15, 1864 in some type of Army hospital around Fayetteville, AR. Cemetery where he is buried has not been found.
