US Senator. He served in the United States Senate from the state of Wyoming from January 3, 1997 to January 3, 2021. He attended both George Washington University and the University of Denver, where he earned both his B.S. in accounting and M.B.A. in retail marketing. After college, he served in the Wyoming Air National Guard from 1967 to 1973. During this time, he also joined his father's shoe-sale business and expanded it. In 1974, he was elected mayor of Gillette, Wyoming and served from 1975 to 1983. He was later elected to the Wyoming State House of Representatives in 1987 and served until 1991. In 1991, he became a member of the Wyoming State Senate and served in this body until 1997. In 1996, he, as a Republican, decided to run for the United States Senate seat that was been vacated by the retiring Sen. Alan Simpson. He was successful in both the GOP primary and the general election and went on to serve in the United States Senate for the next 24 years before stepping down in 2020. During his Senate tenure, he chaired both the Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions and the Senate Budget Committees. He also ranked as one of the legislative body's most conservative members during his tenure. He passed away from injuries after been involved in a bicycle accident.
