He attended St. John's Lutheran School and on January 22, 1941 he was united in marriage to Hilda Luedtke at St. John's Lutheran Church north of Columbus. They farmed together north of Columbus. Vern was a former member of St. John's Lutheran Church, 14 miles north of Columbus. He was a member of the Lutheran Laymen's League and enjoyed bowling with them. He loved baseball and Nebraska football. After retiring and moving to Columbus, he became a member of Peace Lutheran Church and delivered meals on wheels.
