John Bryans was born in August 1942. His father, Mortimer Bryans, came from Grand Forks, North Dakota, USA and was born in 1890. John's mother was Margaret Bryans (nee Spicer) who was born in 1910. Mortimer and Margaret were married in 1941, in Westminster, London.
John was born in 1942, in Marylebone, London, before moving to Colchester, Essex.

He is possibly best known for his recurring role as 'Senator Bercol' during the first two series of Blake's 7 (episodes "Seek-Locate-Destroy" & "Trial"). He also appeared in the third series as the Federation torturer 'Shrinker' (Episode: "Rumours Of Death").

He also appeared in the Doctor Who serial The Creature from the Pit. He played Torvin in the story. He had earlier been considered for the roles of Pa Clanton and Bat Masterson in the 1966 story The Gunfighters.

John played a very good role as a solicitor threatened by the senior head of a crime family in Randall and Hopkirk (Deceased) (ep. "Could You Recognize That Man Again?") and had a major role in the 1970 horror movie anthology The House That Dripped Blood (1970). He played an estate agent who warns a visiting police chief against visiting a house with a deadly past.

Other television credits include: Justice, Bel Ami, Danger Man, The Baron, Dixon of Dock Green, Z-Cars, The Champions, Softly, Softly, The First Lady, , The Guardians, The Troubleshooters, Colditz, Rock Follies, The Gentle Touch, Wilde Alliance and in the 1983 'Only Fools and Horses' (Series 3, episode; "Homesick") He looked a bit ill here. Perhaps the booze was taking hold.

His film roles include the part of  Cardinal Wolsey in Henry VIII and His Six Wives (1972). And Nana (1968)

Sadly, John died on 2nd August 2, 1989, at the very young age of 46, in Colchester hospital, Essex. His death certificate listed cause of death as heart attack resulting from years of alcohol abuse. It also listed him as a university professor.

His funeral was held at Weeley crematorium, Essex on August 14th 1989.
