Dr. Wesley Heber Blood passed away at home suddenly on August 7 after battling what he always referred to as his biggest chronic ailment, A.G.E.. Wes was born in Malad, Idaho, on November 17, 1926, to H. Loran Blood and Marjorie Howard. He had an older brother, Howard, and two beloved younger sisters, Lois and Helen. He lived his formative years in Wisconsin and Logan.
Wes graduated from Logan High School, then served in the Navy during WWII. He went to Boot Camp in San Diego with actor/dancer Gene Kelly. After the Navy he enrolled in college with a football scholarship. A year later his father suddenly died and a year after that he sustained a serious knee injury and lost his scholarship.
Wes then completed two years of Army ROTC, 2nd Lt, and served 12 months in the Korean war. He returned to Utah State University and majored in Civil Engineering. Shortly after returning he was asked to serve a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the Central Atlantic States at the age of 28. It was a very memorable time for him, and he shared many stories about his mission years.
After his mission, he returned to Utah State University to complete his Civil Engineering bachelor's degree. He worked for several years and then returned to USU for an advanced degree. It was there that he met his wife, Chris. They were married in the Logan Temple in 1965. He then completed his Ph.D. in 1968.
Wes and Chris lived in many places from the West Coast to the East Coast. They had one child, Julie Blood Defa. He worked hard, was witty, smart, tough, and had a sense of fashion admired by many. He was very athletic and competitive. He played every sport he could, but his true love was golf. Every recent health decision was made to get him back on the golf course.
He was a humble man, with a shining countenance and gentle nature. Children loved him and always sought him out when visiting his family home. He made them laugh and entertained them with games and activities. He was beloved by all.
Wes had a strong testimony of the teachings of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and awaited the day when he would be reunited with his eternal family, serving as a patron and Temple Worker, personally indexing 40,888 names for ordinance work.
Wesley is survived by his daughter Julie (Todd) Defa and 3 grandchildren, Alan, JC and Dylan. He is preceded in death by his wife, Chris, parents, brother Howard, sisters Lois and Helen and many close friends and family.
Viewing will be on Sunday, August 15, at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 1223 East 7800 South, Midvale, Utah 84047 from 6:00-8:00 p.m. Graveside services will be on Monday, August 16, at Logan City Cemetery, 1000 North 1200 East, Logan, Utaj 84321 at high noon.
