The unit was assigned to the 2nd Brigade, Cavalry Division of the Army of the Mississippi. Moved to Bird's Point, Mo., February 17, 1862. Expedition against Thompson's forces February 25-29. Moved to New Madrid, Mo., March 4. Actions at New Madrid March 13-14. Operations against Island No. 10 March 16-April 8. Expedition to Fort Pillow, Tenn., April 12-17. Moved to Hamburg Landing, Tenn., April 17-22. Action at Birmingham. John died of disease on 22 Apr 1862 in Hamburg Landing, Sevier Co, TN.

According to U.S., Registers of Death of Volunteers, 1861-1865 (ancestry.com), he died 28 April 1862 at the Regimental Hospital of chronic hepititis. He was listed as John Fields.
