HUNT, LAURA ELEANOR MARTIN On August 29, 2018, Laura Eleanor Martin Hunt, cherished mother, devoted wife, beloved sister, and faithful friend, passed away peacefully in Dallas, Texas, at the age of 72. Laura was born on January 2, 1946 in Charlotte, North Carolina to Walter Dairing Martin, Jr. and Catherine Fleming Martin. As the daughter of the zoo's veterinarian in Albany, Georgia, she grew up around a constantly changing stable of animals including horses, lion cubs, and an elephant, which led her to become a lifelong animal lover. A championship swimmer and diver, she was captain of her high school swim team and later enjoyed water skiing and many dive trips in the Caribbean. Laura earned her Bachelor's degree in Spanish and English at Georgia Southwestern and a Master's in Education from Framingham State University. She taught Spanish and coached basketball and cheerleading at Deerfield School in Albany. On December 22, 1977, she married prolific author and CIA veteran, E. Howard Hunt, Jr. Together, they enjoyed dancing, reading, traveling, action films, Republican political activities, and scuba diving. They raised their son and daughter in Guadalajara, Mexico and Miami, Florida. Laura's teaching career spanned five decades, from 1967 in Georgia to 2017 in Florida. She deeply loved her students and taught with a joyful spirit of dedication. Her impeccable grammar skills allowed her to edit more than forty of Howard's manuscripts. Spiritually, she was devout, prayerful and constant to her Christian faith. Last spring, she enjoyed the most magnificent and powerful trip to Israel with her children. Her warm personality produced kindness to one and all; her compassionate nature was concerned about every need of others. Laura was preceded in death by her husband and her younger brother, Ralph Emory Martin. She is survived by her son, Austin Dairing Hunt (Elodie); her daughter, Hollis Fleming Hunt; her brothers, Walter Dairing Martin III (Pam) and John Forrest Martin (Nancy); her sister, Catherine Aldis Martin; her stepdaughters, Kevan Totterdale Hunt Spence (Michael) and Lisa Tiffany Hunt; and loving cousins, nephews, nieces, step-grandchildren, and two adoring cats. A memorial service will be held at the Miami Shores Presbyterian Chapel at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, September 2nd, and she will be laid to rest next to her loving husband in Hamburg, New York. In lieu of flowers, the family would be humbled by and grateful for a gift made in her memory to the LUNGevity Foundation: Laura Eleanor Martin Hunt Tribute Fund or to Faith Presbyterian Hospice: T. Boone Pickens Hospice & Palliative Care Center. Condolence cards for the family may be mailed to 2828 Lemmon Avenue, #5102, Dallas, TX 75204.
