Historian, Author. He was best known for his pioneering books on slavery and its aftermath, which earned him numerous awards including the Pulitzer Prize for history. He received both his B.A. and PhD from the University of California, Berkeley and later went on teach at various universities including his alma mater from 1964 to 2007. During his teaching career at UC-Berkeley, he became a beloved figure on campus. The numerous books that he authored during his career such as "North of Slavery: The Free Negro in the Antebellum North," "Trouble in Mind: Black Southerners in the Age of Jim Crow," and "How Free is Free?: The Long Death of Jim Crow" helped reshape how society viewed and understood American history, and in particular, the impact of slavery on African Americans. His 1979 book "Been In the Storm So Long: The Aftermath of Slavery" earned him several prestigious awards including the Pulitzer Prize for history.
