German Statesman. He served as the first Minister President of the Free State of Saxony from November 8, 1990 to April 18, 2002. He studied law, economics, and political science at both Davidson College and Georgetown University. After obtaining his Master of Laws and Dr.jur., he completed his education back in Germany. He later went into teaching at various universities. In 1973, he got his professional political start by becoming the Secretary General of the Christian Democratic Union under the leadership of party chairman Helmut Kohl. He later resigned his post after disagreements with Kohl and one of his closest rivals. He continued serving within the party until 1990 when he was elected Minister-President of the newly-formed state of Saxony. He went on to serve in this post until 2002 when he stepped down after losing in a power struggle with his former finance minister Georg Milbradt. After leaving office, he went into both writing and a law practice.
