US Cabinet Member. A graduate of Vermont's Black River Academy and Tufts College in Massachusetts, he became an attorney in Ludlow, Vermont in partnership with Calvin Coolidge's cousin William W. Stickney. He served as Windsor County State's Attorney from 1898 to 1900, and when Stickney became Governor in 1900, Sargent served as his Secretary of Civil and Military Affairs (chief assistant). When Stickney's term expired in 1902, Sargent and he returned to their law practice, where Sargent remained until winning election as Vermont Attorney General in 1908, an office he held until 1912. In 1912 Sargent earned a master's degree from Tufts and then resumed practicing law. In 1925 President Coolidge's first choice for Attorney General was rejected by the Senate, and he then named Sargent, who was confirmed unanimously and served until the end of Coolidge's term in 1929. Sargent then returned to his law practice, also serving as director of several railroads and the Ludlow Savings Bank, and a trustee of Black River Academy.
