At 15, he was dragged from his home at gunpoint, hogtied and forced into the river by three white men. His crime was passing a note to a white girl. According to the affidavit given by his mother, Lula Howard, the men took Willie James from their front porch at gunpoint. They then went to the Bond-Howell Lumber Company, where they picked up his father, James Howard and headed to the Suwannee river. An undertaker was ordered to retrieve the body from the river, and Willie James was buried almost immediately. There were no arrests and there was no trial.
