Maxine F. Land, 97, of North Little Rock, Arkansas passed away on August 16, 2021. She was born on September 14, 1923, to Noel and Edna Farmer.
She is preceded in death by her parents; husband, Raymond A. Land; and her siblings, Richard Farmer. Betty Swaim, and Billy Farmer.
Maxine is survived by her daughters, Deborah Lawrence of North Little Rock, Arkansas and Betty Land of Anchorage, Alaska; grandchildren, Ben Lawrence (Amber), Lacey Edrington (David), Nathan Pace (Sarah), Wesley Pace, Daniel Pace (Jenna), Katie Pace and Matthew Pace; great-grandchildren, Luke, Zack, Justus, Addy, Charlee, Bradley, Savannah, Kaylee, and Spencer.
Maxine graduated from Falls City High School in May of 1941. That fall, at 18 years old, Maxine took a train from Nebraska to Little Rock, Arkansas where she enrolled in the St. Vincent's Nurses Training Program. Maxine graduated from the program in May of 1944. In March of 1945, Maxine joined the US Army Nursing Corps and was deployed to the Philippines on the hospital ship USS Comfort in August of that same year. For the next nine months, she cared for US soldiers injured in combat. Maxine returned to the United States in June of 1946. True to her giving nature while serving overseas, Maxine sent money home to help put her younger brother through medical school.
In 1961, Maxine met and married MSgt Raymond Land and became a loving mother to his two young daughters. In 1965, the family was transferred from Little Rock, Arkansas to Anchorage, Alaska where they spent 4 years. She truly loved Alaska especially the mountains and abundant wildlife. She talked often of the moose and Dall sheep and the sounds of a special crumbling mountain. She liked to give away the beautiful African violets that she grew in her home in the middle of the long cold winters. From Alaska, the family moved to Spokane, Washington, and then to North Little Rock, Arkansas when Raymond retired from the military.
After returning to Arkansas, Maxine worked for the North Little Rock Health Department for over twenty years. She was supportive of her family, church, and community. Upon retirement, Maxine continued to volunteer her time and skills to serve others. Maxine lovingly cared for Raymond until his death in 2005. In her golden years, Maxine slowed down a bit, but she still enjoyed time with friends and family, car rides, and ice cream.
The family wishes to thank the Arkansas State Veterans Home for making her last days better.
In keeping with Maxine's care and concern for the community, the family will hold a small graveside service.
