Published in the Piscataquis (ME) Observer 20 Aug 1863 p3: "DIED---In this town [Dover], on the 12th inst., of Diphtheria, Mary E., daughter of Oscar and Harriet B. Woodward, aged 12 years and 11 months. She was gentle and amiable in her disposition, and intelligent beyond her years, and the fond parents and brothers and sisters feel deeply their loss in her early departure from the earthly home; but realizing as they do that she still lives in a more beautiful life---that the casket alone has been laid away, while the gem which it enshrined is still theirs, and is often with them to cheer and bless, they cannot 'mourn as those who have no hope'---but looking trustfully forward with spirit vision they will behold her waiting upon the other shore of life's river to welcome and lead them to the 'Father's house of many mansions.'"
