Mattie married Charles L. "Charlie" Lewis in Columbia County, Arkansas on September 18, 1878. They were the parents of Georgia Idella "Addie" and John Edgar Lewis. The couple divorced and Mattie married Ambrose Henry Sevier "Doc" Ward November 5, 1885 in Miller County, Arkansas. The two were the parents of Burton M. and Jay Joshua Ward. After Doc's death, Mattie ran a boarding house in Grant Parish, LA where she finished raising her son Jay. Mattie would marry a third time on February 4, 1919 in Miller County, Arkansas to Andrew J. Wells but it is not known what happened to their relationship at this time. She was not listed as a survivor in Andrew's obituary and when she passed away in 1936, her obituary in the McCurtain Gazette (15 Jan 1936) states her surname as Ward. According to that obituary, she was buried in the Byram cemetery, now known as the Tom cemetery. Her death certificate states she died January 10, 1936 of paralysis (Stroke).
As a delightful side note, according to her obituary, all of her pallbearers were female!
