Silas O. was one of at least seven children born to Levi and Louisa Fancher Brown (1925 Iowa State Census, Marshall County, under Laura Downing): Lydia A. abt 1854, Susan M. abt 1856, Smith abt 1859, Silas abt 1862, Lucy abt 1864, David abt 1867, and Laura abt 1871.

According to his obituary in the Brown Family History..
Silas O. Brown had a serious illness. It became apparent Sunday that end was near and a consultation of physicians determined that only an operation could save the patient's life and the prospects were one in one hundred that he would survive it. When Mr Brown was told this, he expressed a desire that the operation be performed. Doctors Sanders, Knopper and two otheres whose names we did not learn, undertook it on Monday morning. Mr Brown was very weak at the time, but he lived through the operation and expired with a gasp as it was concluded. (Family history says it was appendicitis and it was done on the kitchen table.)

Silas moved from Fulton County, Illinoisin May 1865 to Story County, Iowa. He was married to Minerva Bates on Oct. 13, 1885.and was the father of 7 children, three boys and four girls, all but one of whom survive him. He had been a faithful member of the United Brothorn Church for ten years, and at the time of his death was Justice of the Peace for Collins Township.

He was a hard working man, an upright citizen, and an accommodating neighbor, and his death will be morned by many besides the sorely bereft wife and children.

Owing to the delicate health of Mrs. Brown, no funeral services were held at the house or church, but those rites will coccur at Willow Creek Church at some day in the near future.

Silas married Minerva E. Bates and they had a family of eight children: Walter E. 1885, Gracie A. 1887, Gertie L. 1888, Loyd E. 1890, Iva A. 1892, Lee V. 1895, Lena V. 1895-1895 and Susie O. 1898.(born a month after his death)
