STRALEY, Herbert W., Sr. - Of Clarkston, died Thursday, January 23, 2001, age 95. He was the husband of E. Pauline; father of Herbert W. Straley, Jr., Dr. James E. Straley and Margaret Faye Straley; grandfather of five and great-grandfather of seven. Mr. Straley was born November 2, 1905 in Toledo, Lucas County, Ohio. The Straley family moved to Michigan about 1910 and settled in Flint where Herbert attended school. He graduated from Flint Central High School in 1922. He engaged in the accounting profession, employed by Buick Motor Company in Flint until appointed to the Flint Police Department by James P. Cole, Chief of Police. After serving with the Flint Police Department as a Det. Lieutenant for over sixteen years, he left in 1941 at the outbreak of World War II, when he was appointed Agent of the United States Secret Service. He was assigned to the President's Staff at the White House in Washington, D.C. He served under President Roosevelt and later under President Truman. During his duty in Washington, the "pressure" of Military Service took him into the U.S. Marine Corps where he served 3 years in Intelligence Work and Prison Administration. He held the rank of Major in the Marine Corps Reserve. After the war, he returned to the U.S. Secret Service until about 1947, when Gov. G. Mennen Williams appointed him as Director of Division of Pardons, Paroles and Probation of the Michigan Department of Corrections in Lansing, Michigan. He left that post in Lansing in 1951 to accept the Position as Chief of Police in Pontiac. He retired from this position in 1960 after serving 10 years as Chief. Since August, 1960 Mr. Straley has been engaged in Real Estate profession and was Court Officer for the 48th District Court until he retired in 1989. He was a member of OX5 Aviation Pioneers, Oakland County Law Enforcement Assn., FOP #132, K of C of Keego Harbor, and the Association of U.S. Secret Service Agents. Mr. Straley was a member of Our Lady of the Lakes Catholic Church where he will lie in state Friday, January 26, 2001, 10:30AM until time of the Funeral Mass at 11AM, Rev. James Kean officiating. Rite of Committal New Calvary Cemetery, Flint. The family will receive friends at Donelson, Johns and Evans Funeral Home, Waterford, MI on Thursday from 3-5 and 7-9PM.
