John owned various parcels of land in Pasquotank & Camden Counties.

During the Revolutionary War John fought against the British. He was a Captain and the commander of a company of Camden soldiers {about 23 men}. On 15 Mar 1781 he and his men fought the British at the Battle of Guilford Court House in Guilford, NC. Unfortunately John was wounded and died of from his wounds. {The battle only lasted 90 minutes, the losses were 1300 Americans and 526 British.) Ultimately the battle proved pivotal to the American victory in the American Revolutionary War

Here is a quote from 300 Years Along the Pasquotank,
Captain John Forbes was a younger son of Bailey Forbes (married to E. Bray] and thus received only a modest bequest from his father. John married Rebecca Williams, one of the most personable young women in the county and the possessor of considerable means. They established residence near a spot soon to become known as Mill Town, from which the view of the broad river must have been as lovely as it is today.
John was very diplomatic and even as a young man held in esteem by everyone.
...
. when the battle began at Guilford Court House on March 15, 1781, Captain Forbes was there, and he gave his life for the cause of freedom.
