Andrew Jackson Carter was born in AL to William Carter & Sarah Hightower, grandson of James Henry Carter and Winefred Reece who married Oct 9, 1826 in Cumberland Co., NC. James H Carter was the son of John Carter and Sarah A Crim.

After Andrews father's death, his mother married William Davis in 1859. The family moved to Washington Co., Tx prior to 1880, and Andrew married Susan "Amanda" Bradley on 12 Nov 1880.

He had a 1/2 sister Frances Elizabeth Davis who married John T Shine.

Andrew and Amanda had 13 children, 11 lived to adulthood: Lena Rivers Shine, William Arnold, Sallie Hobbes Radford, Maude Elizabeth Hammons, John "Pat" Thomas, James Andrew, Mamie Mae Hamrick Hetherington, Viola Izabelle, Nannie Ethel Carson King, Stella Leona Hughes, Anna Ilene Patzke, Infant Boy Carter, & Frankie Laura Radford.
