He received his education at Westphalia, Iowa.
April 16, 1918 he was united in marriage to Theresa Schneider in St. Boniface church at Westphalia.
He entered the U.S. Army in August of 1918 and after an honorable discharge began his farming career in Westphalia twp. where he lived until his retirement in 1950.
He retired to Harlan, where he was a member of St. Michaels parish, the Knights of Columbus, Harlan Council and American Legion, Helmer Reyelt Post No. 150.
Survivors include his wife Theresa, one son, Francis of Gardner, North Dakota, one daughter, Mrs Mary Jean (Leander) Zimmerman of Harlan; six grandchildren; four sisters, Mrs Barbara Wageman of Harlan; Mrs Frank Kramer of Defiance; Mrs George Henkelman of Vail and Mrs Catherine Henkelman of Manilla; and one half-brother, Alfons Schechinger of Panama.
Funeral services were held in St. Michael's church at Harlan, Thursday January 9, 1958 with Rev. Walsh officiating the Mass and Rev. Duren of Westphalia delivering the sermon.
Burial was held in the Harlan cemetery with military rites.
Pallbearers were; Cyprian Goeser, Clarence Weihs, Robert Blum, Tony Wageman, Carl Anastasi and Joe Schechinger.
Honorary pallbearers were; Frank Potter, Henry Anastasi, Frank Zimmerman and Ray Lickteig.
