American baseball team owner. Rulys grandfather, R. R. M. Carpenter Sr. bought the Philadelphia Phillies in 1943 for $400,000 and gave control of them to his son Bob Carpenter for the next 29 years. When Bob stepped down in 1972 he remained as chairman of the board and his son Ruly became the teams new owner and president. From 1976 to 1980 the team won the NL East in every season but one. They even won the World Series in 1980 against the Kansas City Royals 4 games to 2. Shortly after the 80 World Series Ruly decided to sale the Phillies. He sold them to a group of investers that included longtime Phillies executive Bill Giles for $32.5 million in 1981. He graduated from Yale University in 1962 where he earned 2 letters in varsity football. He was inducted into the Delaware Sports Hall of Fame in 1987. He was married to Stephanie Conklin and together they had 3 children sons Bobby and David and a daughter, Lucinda.
