Henry W. Hull, a prominent attorney of Madrid and claiming to be the first white child born in Boone county, passed away at his home in Granger at 2:00 o'clock Tuesday morning, July 23, after a brief illness.
Mr. Hull was born near Belle Point in Boone county, on the farm now known as the Ira Long farm, August 8, 1847, and lacked but a few days of being 65 years old at the time of his death.
He joined the Union army in 1864, when but 17 years old and served until the close. He participated in the grand review at Washington and there suffered a sunstroke and was confined in a hospital for some time. After returning home he engaged for a number of years in teaching and during spare time studied law. He was admitted to the bar in 1878 and had since practiced his profession. He first opened an office at Grant city, Missouri, and practiced there until 1890. He then removed to Des Moines, where he remained until 1900 and then came to Madrid and opened an office and continued the practice there until his death occurred. Death was caused by kidney trouble and other complications.
Mr. Hull was first married to Miss Kate Swift, a native of Wayne county, New York, and to them were born five children, Frank G. of Madrid, J. Fred, a newspaper publisher at Maryville, Missouri, Arthur R., who died a few years ago, Sophia E., a nurse at Kirksville, Missouri, and Emma of Madrid.
His first wife died several years ago and he later married Miss Nancy Harris of Des Moines. One son, Harris W., now at home, was born to this union, and still resides at home with his mother.
The remains were brought to Madrid on the Milwaukee train Friday morning and taken to the Sundberg undertaking parlors, where they remained until noon and were viewed by hundreds of friends. They were then taken to the Meadow Grove church near Luther, where the funeral services were held at 2:00 o'clock. The funeral sermon was preached by the Rev. R. A. Lewis of the Madrid Christian church and the G.A.R. post, of which he was an honored member, had charge of the services. The funeral was largely attended by old friends and neighbors and the floral tributes were numerous and beautiful. He was an honored member of the Boone County Bar Association and many of the members of that organization attended the funeral. John A. Hull delivered a short address at the funeral, being connected with the deceased.
