John was born October 1, 1911 in Schaefer, Russia to John Sr. and Elizabeth Ertel. The family immigrated to the United States in 1912 and settled in Sheboygan. He attended local schools.
He was married to Janet Buschmann, of Sheboygan who preceded him in death in 1988.
John was an employee of the former Sheboygan Dry Goods where he was a furniture salesman. He also worked in furniture stores in Long Island, N.Y., Peoria, and Waukegan, III.
Following his retirement In 1975, he returned to Sheboygan. He was a former member of the Sheboygan Elks Lodge 299. He enjoyed bowling and golfing with his friends.
Survivors include a daughter, Jacquelyn A. Everly; a grandson, Jason Everly, both of Los Angeles, Calif.; two sisters, Adele (Walter) Stielow and Emily (Ed) Petkus, all of Sheboygan; and numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Frederick and a sister Marie Ertel.
Graveside services will be held Tuesday, 1 p.m. at the Lutheran Cemetery, Friends are welcomed to attend. Rev. Kenneth Rosche will officiate. The Ballhom Funeral Chapels are coordinating the service arrangements.
