Chico Daily Record, Monday, May 13, 1901, pg 1 col 2: J.G. Goodwin Dead. John Gilman Goodwin, a veteran of the civil war, died Saturday night after a long illness at his home on 9th street. Deceased was a native of Illinois, aged 63 years. He enlisted at Elgin, Kane County, Ill, in the spring of 1861, and was a private of Co A, 7th Reg. Ill. volunteers. He came to California in 1872 and later went to Oregon, where he engaged in a mercantile business. He came to Chico about ten years ago. He leaves a wife and one son.

Veterans benefits were sought on September 19, 1898; Chico Cemetery Association burial records indicate interment, "age 63", took place on May 13, 1901; and widow's benefits were allowed to Syren Goodwin on May 25, 1901.
