Born in Avondale Estates, DeKalb County, Georgia, Friday, June 22, 1910, he was a son of the late George Washington York and Lillie Belle Neely York. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Locust Grove, Georgia.
On October 28, 1933, he married Lillian Sarah Dorris in Atlanta, Georgia.
Ernest was preceded in death by not only his parents, but also by his daughter, Patricia Jean York; brothers, Herman York, James Ira York, and Naamon Osco York; and sisters, Lilly Pearl York, Alma Nora York Phillips, and Clara Maude York Alexander.
Surviving are his wife; daughters, Zaretta Faye York Darnell (Edwin E.) Rodgers, Concord, Georgia, and Marlene York, Salt Lake City, Utah; grandchildren, Joel Nathan Darnell, Amanda Lynn Darnell (Keith) Turner, Fairon Lee Darnell, Thomas Neal Erwin, and Trent Steven Owens; great-grandchildren, Tiffany Rose Darnell, Timothy Joel "T.J." Darnell, Courtney Turner, Andrea Nicole Turner, Justin Brian Turner; and several nieces and nephews.
Ernest chose cremation. His memorial service was held at 2:00 p.m., Friday, November 27, 1998, at the First Baptist Church of Locust Grove, with Reverend Ken Haag officiating.
