Charles William 'Bill' Baker, 87, of Shelbyville, Indiana passed away Monday, March 21, 2016 at Franklin United Methodist Community in Franklin, Indiana.
He was born March 26, 1928 in Shelby County, Indiana, the son of Clarence F and Maudie (Griffey) Baker.
On May 18, 1957 he married his wife of 58 years, Janet Keister, and she survives. Bill is also survived by his son William Jay Baker and wife Vicki of Athens, Alabama; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers: Richard Baker, John Baker and Jack Baker; and a sister: Doris Theobald.
Bill was a member of First Baptist Church in Shelbyville, where he was formerly a deacon and sang in the choir.
He was a US Navy Veteran, serving during World War II and the Korean Conflict. Bill served on the USS Midway and USS Tarawa.
Bill was a tool and die maker, working many years at General Electric and retiring from J & L Tool.
He had a greenhouse and loved to raise flowers, especially orchids.
Bill enjoyed golfing , fishing and spending time at the lake. He held a record for catching the largest large-mouth bass in Indiana.
He also leaves behind his beloved cat, Miss Kitty.
A gathering of friends will be from 12 noon to 3 pm Monday at First Baptist Church, 27 W Broadway St in Shelbyville.
A memorial service will be at 3 pm Monday at the church with pastor Bruce Banister and Bill's great nephew, Tony Nading, officiating.
Military rites will be conducted by the local military committee.
Services have been entrusted to Freeman Family Funeral Homes and Crematory, 819 S Harrison St in Shelbyville. Memorial contributions my be made to First Baptist Church.
