ACCIDENT FATAL TO 2 CHILDREN
Mother Injured As Train Hits Car
BLISSFIELD, MICH - Two children were killed Tuesday afternoon when the car in which they were riding was struck broadside by a train at an unguarded crossing in Riga Township.
Shelley June Keefer, 5, and Scott Charles Keefer, 4, children of Mr. and Mrs. Arden Keefer, of Morenci, were killed and Mrs. Keefer, the car driver, was injured when the vehicle was hit by a northeast-bound freight train at Silberhorn Highway and the Detroit, Toledo & Ironton tracks, four miles south of Blissfield.
Mrs. Keefer was listed in good condition today at University Hospital. She was transferred there from Bixby Hospital, Adrian, Tuesday evening.
The Blissfield post of the state police said Mrs. Keefer was driving south on Silberhorn Highway when she approached the 45-degree crossing without seeing the train. The car was caught by the train's engine and tossed nearly 100 feet through the air. The girl was tossed free of the car but the mother and son were trapped inside. Both children were pronounced dead at the scene.
Police said that the engineer, Kenneth Schlosser, 47, of Trenton, Mich., told them that the train was traveling about 45 miles an hour.
Mrs. Keefer was returning home from a visit with her parents who live near the railroad crossing. The children's bodies are in the Fink Mortuary, Morenci.
