Frank E. Granitz, age 89, a former Manitowoc resident, died peacefully Tuesday, Dec. 15, 2009, at the residence of his daughter in Gorham, Maine, where he has resided since 2001.

Frank was born on May 12, 1920, in Milwaukee, son of the late Frank and Ann (Weber) Granitz.

He was a graduate of Messmer High School Class of 1938. He then served with the United States Army Air Corp. during World War II, from 1942 to 1945. After the war, he obtained his Master's Degree in Physical Education from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

On Dec. 27, 1947, he married the former Betty J. Heyman in Wausau. She preceded him in death in 1999.

For over thirty years, Frank had the privilege of being a physical education instructor and coach at Manitowoc's Lincoln High School. To his great joy, many of his former students and colleagues have kept in touch over the years and miles. Many still called him "Coach." During his years at Lincoln, he was dubbed "Fundamental Frank," for his constant stressing of the basics of the sport he was teaching or coaching. Frank was also an active member of the Manitowoc Elks Lodge (B.EO.E) prior to moving to Maine.

Survivors include three daughters and two sons-in-law: Judith A. Granitz, Thoreau, N.M.; Patricia and David Friedlander, Gorham, Maine; Barbara and Scott Foss, Eugene, Ore.; five grandchildren: Arin, Ezra, Mark, Rachel and Gabe; three great-grandsons: Jordan, Isaac and Benjamin; and a brother-in-law: Al Goral, Brookfield, Wis. Nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends also survive.

He was preceded in death by a brother Edward; and a sister Pauline GoraL Frank's passing leaves a void in our lives, of course-but we take great comfort in knowing that he has embarked on a new voyage, with his Savior Jesus, for eternity!

Cremation was performed and a private memorial service will be held in Maine. Online memorials may be made at wwwindependent deathcare.com. The Pfeffer Funeral Home, Manitowoc, is assisting the family with local funeral arrangements.
