Beloved brother of Sister James Marie O'Connor, SSND.


Fr. James J. O'Connor, 91, died Tuesday, Dec. 4, 2007, at Saint Anne Home, Fort Wayne. He was born on Aug. 27, 1916, in Gary.

Father O'Connor graduated from Holy Angels School, Gary, St. Joseph College, Rensselaer and Sulpician Theological Seminary, Catholic University of America, Washington, D.C. (Basselin Scholarship). He was ordained to the Priesthood on June 6, 1943 at the Cathedral of Immaculate Conception, Fort Wayne, by Bishop John F. Noll.

He was a teacher at Central Catholic High School from 1943 to 1953. On July 8, 1943, Father O'Connor was appointed Assistant-St. Bridget Church, Hobart, Ind.; July 3, 1951 appointed Assistant-St. John the Baptist Church, Fort Wayne; June 15, 1960, appointed Pastor-St. Francis Xavier Church, Pierceton; June 15, 1962, appointed Pastor-St. Mary Church in Huntington; June 11, 1962 appointed Dioceason "Censor Librorum"; June 20, 1962 appointed to serve on Diocesan Church Music Commission; July 1, 1968 appointed Pastor-St. Henry Church, Fort Wayne; Sept. 1, 1991 Father O'Connor retired.

He was blessed with a tremendous sense of humor. "Spiritually he loved the Priesthood and being a Priest. He was a very special man of God. Very priestly and prayerful, he loved being an educator and enjoyed teaching." He was active and worked with the Christian Family Life movement.

Survivors include sisters, Therese O'Connor of Merrillville and Sister James Marie, SSND, of Rockford, Ill.; cousins, Mrs. Emmett (Jean) O'Connor, Mr. and Mrs. Robert O'Connor, both of Pennsylvania, Mrs. Eileen LaMay of Florida, Mrs. Jean Ringsdorf of Pennsylvania, Bonnie and Dan O'Connell of New York; and former secretary for 40 years, Genevieve Kasper of Columbia City.

Mass of Christian Burial is 10:30 a.m. Friday at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, 1122 S. Clinton Street, with calling one hour prior. Bishop John D'Arcy officiating. Calling also from 3 to 8 Thursday at the church with Rosary at 5:00 and Vigil at 7:30 p.m. Thursday. Burial in Calvary Cemetery, Portage, Ind., with his parents, Luke and Brigid O'Connor.
