Captain James Andrews was killed in the crash of a B-24 bomber "I'se A Royal Hawaiian" on 5 March 1944. The aircraft departed from Mullinix Field, Bonriki, Tarawa atoll for a routine flight, but crashed at sea 300 yards from the island of Buota at 1520 hours. All ten men aboard were killed instantly.

Andrews was a veteran of 66 combat missions, and according to contemporary newspaper reports was the recipient of the Distinguished Flying Cross and Air Medal with four oak leaf clusters.

Prior to the war, he graduated from Miami High School and attended the University of Georgia.
