AGE 66 YEARS
Bruce H. Hurd of West Newbury, died on September 27, 2021 in hospice care. He was diagnosed with laryngeal cancer in 2019 and survived the last two challenging years with grace and courage. He taught himself to talk again and continued to make bad jokes, play golf, travel, garden, root for his beloved Patriots, enjoy time with friends and family, and spoil his cats.
Born in Wolfeboro, NH he moved to Newburyport as a child, graduating from NHS in 1973. His proudest achievement there was winning an award from the junior class for "Outsmarting Mr. P." He attended Northern Essex Community College and graduated from Northeastern University in 1980 with a degree in Criminal Justice. Bruce began his lifelong career working with kids, first at the Challenge Program in Boston, the Department of Youth Services, and the Essex County Juvenile Probation Department. One of his proudest achievements was helping to launch the Newburyport Youth Football League.
He is survived by his loving wife of 42 years, Joyce (Gardner) Hurd; his sister Joanne Fleming of Washington; his brother Robert Hurd of New Mexico; his brother-in-law and sister-in-law of New Hampshire. He also leaves beloved nephews and nieces and their families, along with extended family. He was predeceased by his parents William R. Hurd and Jeannette (Morgan) Hurd, and his brother William R. Hurd, Jr.
Living every day to its fullest, Bruce never sat still, had the quickest wit, cherished his family and friends and any furry creature that crossed his path, particularly cats. He will be greatly missed.
Interment at the Belleville Cemetery will be private. A Celebration of Life for friends and family will be held at a later date.
Arrangements are by Elliott, Woodworth and Rogers Family Funeral Home, 35 Green Street, NEWBURYPORT, MA 01950.
