Obituary for Charles Freeland Newton, Jr

God called Freedy home as he slept in his recliner on Mama's birthday. Freedy was born on October 24, 1947 at home at Grandma Ella's in Sumner on the bayou on a muggy, cloudy, windy day, a warm day, in the 70's, for late October. Daddy was so proud. He came out of the room laughing, and said they had a scrawny little girl. Much to everyone's surprise there was a 10+ lb baby boy laying with Mama. We were all a tribe of cousins on Jenkins Hill. There were 18 of us. Flynn was the "king of the hill," and when he left for college, Freeland inherited the title.

Freeland attended West Tallahatchie High School, and Northwest Community college following graduation. He then joined the National Guard where he served for many years. He often talked about how hard it was packing up and sending young boys to Vietnam. He later became the Chief of Police in Webb before becoming the town manager, a position he held until his death. He was very loved by all who knew him.

Freeland is survived by his sons, Charles Freeland Newton, III (Cassandra), Benjamin Lewis Newton, and daughters Sara Newton and Cassidy Doughtery. He is also survived by his sisters, Delilah Hollis Brower (Ronnie) and Farrah Ferguson (Scott), his grandchildren, Marley Newton (Jacob), Aila Newton, Ava Grace Doughtery, Noah Doughtery, Kristin Newton (David), Katelynn Watts (Alex), Soloman Newton, Kaidyn Newton, and great grandchildren Aurora Gordon and Elijah Watts, and his significant other, Charlotte Pruitt Sullivan. His nephews, Ron Brower (Stacey), Dylan Brower (Trista) , and his niece Shannon Brower (Matt) adored their Uncle Freedy.

He was preceded in death by his father Charles Freeland Newton, Sr., mother Betty Zane Berry, sister Deborah Ann, and his grandparents, Boone and Ella Jenkins, and James and Alice Newton.

Freeland was a member of Sumner Baptist Church for over sixty years. He was an honorable, good man who was always willing to lend a helping hand to anyone who needed it. He never let age slow him down. He loved to fish, and shop at flea markets. Most of all, he loved God and his family. He lived, truly lived until the day God sent his angels to fetch him. Our only comfort now is knowing what a beautiful present Mama received on her birthday in Heaven. There is some rejoicing going on up there right now. Freedy often said he was born on the bayou, and would die on the bayou. It was his fervent wish that he go in his sleep when his time came. God heard him and took him home just as he wished.

The celebration of life will be Tuesday, September 28th at Meredith Nowell Funeral home in Clarksdale, with visitation at 2 P. M., and the service at 3 P. M. Burial will follow at our family Cemetery on Jenkins Hill in Sumner. It sits and waits to claim another of it's own.
