Obituary from The Beloit Gazette, Beloit, Kansas, Thursday, 15 Mar 1900, Page 6 (Transcribed by Mark C. Quakenbush):

Died.
On Sunday, March 11, at the home of his sister, a few miles north of this city, John Quakenbush, aged 74 years 3 months and 26 days. He was born in North Carolina, but while he was very young his parents emigrated to Indiana, where he grew to manhood and where he was married and reared a family. At the outbreak of the civil war he enlisted in the Indiana regiment and served throughout the war. He came to Kansas in the fall of 1885, and settled in Mitchell county. His wife died about six years ago, since which time he had made his home with his children and other relatives living in Mitchell county. He had been in feeble health for a long time. He drove to town last Friday with his son, and on his way home he stopped to visit his sister, Mrs. Ike Miller, where he was suddenly stricken with paralysis. He lingered in an unconscious condition until Sunday forenoon, when death came to his relief. He leaves four children- one son and three daughters: Jottie Quakenbush, residing in this county; Mrs. Allie Abrams, also of this county; Mrs. Mary J. Riggles, of Phillips county, and Mrs. Martha Streepy, residing in Indiana. He was a kind and genial old gentleman and highly respected by all who knew him. He was buried at West Asher Monday at 2 p.m., the funeral services being conducted by Rev. Wertz, of the Baptist church, Scottsville.
