Roman Catholic Cardinal. He was the archbishop of Maputo from 1975 to 2003. He studied at Nyasaland and Lisbon before he was ordained a Roman Catholic priest in 1953. In 1973, he became the first African to run a seminary in Mozambique. Two years later, he was appointed the archbishop of Maputo and served in this position until 2003. He was created a cardinal by Pope John Paul II on June 26, 1988, and given the titular church of San Frumenzio ai Prati Fiscali. He was instrumental in the peace process surrounding the end of the Mozambican Civil War. He officially retired in 2003.
