Just four days after the passing of my mother, my husband and I adopted a beautiful little kitten from the humane society. What we didn't know was that she was FeLV positive. They don't screen kittens for the feline leukemia virus. For two years our beautiful cat was our heart, our joy. She used to cuddle into the crook of my neck and purr. I was her person. One day in September of 2021, FeLV changed from dormant to active and aggressively wore her down. She lost a pound, and was sleeping most of the time, not eating, not drinking. We rushed her to the vet but she was so ill from feline leukemia, so fast, there was nothing he could do to save her. To the best of our understanding, we were told that her outlook was dismal. To keep her alive would be to prolong her suffering for mere days, and we would not let her live in such pain. She had tummy pain and was very lethargic. We didn't want her to suffer, so we made the difficult decision to put her down. My husband held her in his arms as the vet's office sedated her. She was then carried to a table where she was euthanized. She was cremated and her ashes spread in the Paws at Rest garden of the Shirley & Stout Mortuary grounds, so she will be forever with other cats, as she was a kitten who was born to a feral mother. Our dear sweet Bella will never be forgotten. She honored us with her presence for two years. She is deeply missed.
