His birth date is rather confusing. Obviously the stone, which is not really to be trusted for various reasons, has Jan. 14. His World War I registration record has Jan. 17. That is information that would have come from him directly in 1918 and is documentation as near to his birth as I can find. His Social Security death record also has Jan. 17 which probably came from a birth record of some sort when he got his SS card. The California Death Index does have Jan. 14 but that is probably based on his death certificate which has information that came from an "informant" who may not have known his correct birth date. So even I am keeping the birth date of January 17 even though it conflicts with the headstone which has information that probably came from his county death certificate.

John Jerome Harlan, son of Elisha Harlan and Lucy Irene (Hobaugh) Harlan, married Eba Alva Bradley. They ranched near Riverdale, Fresno county.

OBITUARY OF JOHN JEROME HARLAN
Fresno Bee, July 16, 1968 (Tuesday).

John Jerome Harlan died 14 JUL 1968.

"Riverdale [California] Homestead Native Dies, 93.

Merced [California] - Another chapter in the early history of Fresno County has closed with the death here of John J. "Jerome" Harlan, 93.

Harlan was born on a ranch near Riverdale [Fresno County] homesteaded by his parents [Elisha Harlan] more than 100 years ago. He died Sunday [July 14] in a local hospital.

Harlan made his home on the ranch and carried on the family cattle business until he retired 15 years ago, and came to Merced to live with a daughter and son-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Vance Edmundson, 101 E. 21st St.

His grandfather, George Harlan, was wagon master of a wagon train which started its westward trek in 1846.

It was at Weber Canyon, Utah, that the ill-fated Donner Party left the Harlan train and eventually met disaster in the Sierra. The remainder of the train reached California safely.

Harlan's late wife, the former Eva Bradley, was a Merced County school teacher and a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William Bradley, early county settlers.

He is survived also by another daughter, Mrs. Phyllis Morgan of Livermore; a son, Jerome of Riverdale; a sister, Mrs. Aleda Sherrill of Los Angeles,; and five grandchildren.

Funeral services will be conducted at 10 a.m. tomorrow in the Evangelical United Brethren Church in Riverdale, Burial will be in the Washington Colony Cemetery in Easton. The Ivers & Alcorn Chapel is in charge of local arrangements.

The family requests that any remembrances be sent to the Merced branch of the Central California Heart Association." END

"Obituaries.
John J. Harlan.
RIVERDALE. John J. (Jerome), Harlan, 93, whose parents homesteaded 160 acres near Riverdale in 1868, died Sunday night in a Merced hospital.

Harlan was born Jan. 17, 1875, on the Harlan ranch, northeast of Riverdale where the first post office was located. His mother [Lucy Irene (Hobaugh) Harlan] served as the postmaster for a number of years prior to the office being moved into Riverdale.

Harlan was engaged in the cattle business until his retirement. Harlans grandfather, George, was the leader of the historically well known Harlan Wagon Train which started west from Michigan in 1845. The large train started its westward trek from Missouri in 1848 [1846], and at Weber Canyon in Utah, the unfortunate Donner party went its separate way, and the balance of the train reached California safely.

Harlan had made his home with a son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Vance (Maude) Edmonson of Merced in recent years. Harlans wife, who preceded him in death, was the former Eba Bradley, who taught in the Riverdale, Liberty, Bender and Westside areas for many years.

Survivors in addition to Mrs. Edmonson include another daughter, Mrs. Phyllis Morgan of Livermore; a son Jerome Harlan Jr. of Riverdale; a sister Mrs. Aleda Sherrill of Los Angeles; five grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday morning at 10 oclock in the Evangelical United Brethren Church in Riverdale. Iverson and Alcorn Funeral Home of Merced is in charge of arrangements. Interment will be in the Washington Colony Cemetery near Fresno."
