Civil War Union Army Soldier. He served during the Civil War as a Sergeant in Company I, 19th Maine Volunteer Infantry. He was killed in action on July 3, 1863 during the Battle of Gettysburg.

He was buried in the Gettysburg National Cemetery with his fellow fallen comrades from Maine. His family erected a cenotaph for him in their family plot in Greenwood Cemetery, Montville, Waldo County, Maine.
