Ella B. Weeks, Wife Of Aiken Mayor

Ella Byers Weeks died Monday, June 5,1989, in her residence.

Mrs. Weeks, 73, resided at 824 S. Boundary Ave. SE.

The funeral will take place Wednesday at 5 p.m. in Aiken First Baptist Church with the Rev. James M. King officiating.

Burial is to be in Bethany Cemetery. Mrs. Weeks was the wife of Mayor H. Odell Weeks. She was a native of Petersburg, Va. She was a resident of Aiken for the past 54 years. She was a member of Aiken First Baptist Church. She was a charter member of the Garden Makers Garden Club and president of the organization from 1956-57. She was a certified flower show judge. She was a member of the Garden Club of South Carolina and of the National Council of State Garden Clubs.

Mrs. Weeks was dedicated to the preservation of natural resources and to the education of the public about flowers, trees, shrubs and birds. She supported the National Council's scholarship program for horticulture students by donating sums of money in honor of various persons. She was active in church work. She taught a Sunday school class at Aiken First Baptist Church.

"She was a lady devoted to her family and one who gave tremendous support to her husband. There is no way you can perform well in a public job without a good helpmate, which she certainly was," said Roland H. Windham, Aiken's city manager.

A fellow Garden Makers' member, Marie Danlen, said, "She had such an unassuming nature, considering she was a mayor's wife for so many years. She was a stabilizing influence in the garden club.
