Michael Acree, age 68, of Proctor, WV, passed away at his home on Monday, October 11, after a short battle with cancer.
He was born September 4, 1953, in Charleston, WV, Bonnie M. Acree and June (Lykins) Acree.
After graduating high school, he worked at Corning Glass before becoming a certified welder at Hobart Welding Institute. He retired from North American Coal Company, Quarto # 4 mine, Powhatan Point, OH.
He was a member of the Proctor Christian Church, UMWA and Loyal Order of the Moose Lodge #931 since 1976. Mike was a musician and songwriter and wrote several songs. He played music with many musicians and venues up and down the Ohio River. He formed "The Rebel Shelter Band" in 1985 and from there "The Back-to-Back Band". He was nominated in 1998 by Jessica Culpepper Music BMI of Nashville, TN for the prestigious Trail Blazer Award for two of his songs "She Can Dance" and "Last Request". He played at Jamboree in the Hills in 1996.
Survivors include his wife of 45 years, Cheri (Cross) Acree; Mother June Acree; a daughter, Tiffany (Brett) Leary; granddaughter Kynlee June Leary, (which he doted on) and grandson Zev Anthony Leary of Proctor; two brothers, Joe Acree of Proctor, and David (Kelley) Acree of Paden City, WV; Sister-in-law Linda (Jim) Simms of Mount Clare, WV: Jean Mayfield of St. Mary's, WV; Nephews Jimmy (Nicole) Simms, Matt (Shannon) Lookadoo, Colby Acree and Nieces, Marcie (Eric) Kincaid, Billie Jo (Matt) Haddox, Christa (Franklin) King, Jodi (Steve) Kandybowicz, Aimee (Brad) Ducker and Hayley Acree; Uncles Harold "Doc" (Jan) Lykins and Larry Bunfill.
He was preceded in death by his father, Bonnie M. Acree, father-in-law William (Bill) Cross and mother-in-law Betty (Baxter) Cross; sister-in-law Nancy (Cross) Davis and Aunt Helen Bunfill.
All are invited to attend a graveside service on Wednesday at 2:00 pm at Greenlawn Memorial Park, New Martinsville, with Linda Simms officiating.
