JOHN NICOLAUS WAGENER
(1805 - 1897)

Death of John Nicholas Wagner
He Passed Away at the Age of 92

At the close of last week, the life of John Nicholas Wagner, one of the early settlers of the county, came to a close at the home of his son-in-law, Capt. Wm Henry of this city with whom he and his aged companion have spent their winters for the past few years. The summers they spent with their son, Mr. August Wagner of Mishicott, who now owns the farm they settled upon in 1852 after their long journey by land and sea from the home of their childhood, in the picturesque Mosel in far off Prussia. With them came their large family of children whom they wished to raise in this land of the free and for whose welfare they crossed the ocean.

John Nicholas Wagner (he was generally known as Nicholas Wagner) was born in Croev on the Mosel on the 4th day of May, 1805 and consequently would have been 92 years of age had he lived until the 4th of next May. He was married to Kate Schwistal in 1833 who still survives him and who bore him nine children, 5 sons and 4 daughters. All their children lived to grow up but two sons, Peter and William, are now dead. Their sons now living are Thomas of Waupun, August of Mishicott and Arnold of Sturgeon Bay. Their daughters are Mrs. Wm. Henry of this city, Mrs. H. Cochems and Mrs. John Grans of Sturgeon Bay and Mrs. Wm Mueller of Mishicott.

Mr. Wagner was a man of splendid health and magnificent physique and the only sickness he ever had was that which terminated his life and was only a few days' duration. It was always his boast that he never had taken any medicine or required the service of a physician and his wife, we believe, makes the same boast. He was very fond of his children and grandchildren and always seemed happiest when surrounded by them. His affection for his children was fully reciprocated and their annual reunions were always very happy and enjoyable affairs. He was fond of music and a great singer and so was his devoted wife and companion and the enjoyment of many social gatherings was enhanced by their singing. Indeed, not two weeks before his death they sang a duet - an old German folksong - to an accompaniment played by their granddaughter, Mrs. Chas. Krause, upon the organ.

His funeral takes place from the residence of his son-in-law this afternoon. C. Pahlcotter is to conduct the funeral ceremonies.
