Uncle Hurley was a farmer growing almost everything they needed in order to survive. Along with the peas and corn that stood 10-12 feet tall, he had pigs, cows, chickens, mules, etc., he had just about every fruit tree that could grow in Alabama. All that combined was the best eating around. Aunt Otha jamed and jellied herself crazy and prepared all the peas, corn, potatoes for freezing or canning. Nothing went to waste. Across the red clay road was the barn and out-house.

In front of their house was the well which held the coldest water in this world. Frost would immediately cover the dipper and one was guaranteed an instant headache.

In our family, they were the first to receive indoor plumbing and electricity.

Uncle Hurley was a closed-mouthed man who never had much to say about anything or held it inside and a devout Methodist being a member of County Line Methodist Church.
