Alexander Wharton McLean, 57, passed away on Friday, February 2, 2018 at his residence in St. Augustine, FL. He struggled with diabetes and its various complications throughout his life, but always had a positive outlook and never allowed those conditions to limit him.
Alex was born and raised in Greensboro, NC. He was a member of First Presbyterian church and enjoyed many years in its Boy Scouts Troop 203. He graduated from Walter Hines Page High School, serving as manager of the basketball team, and graduated in 1983 from The University of North Carolina - Chapel Hill with a business degree. He was a member of Alpha Tau Omega fraternity. Alex also took science and engineering courses at The University of North Carolina at Charlotte which led to a career in the powder coatings business. He held various positions including senior chemist and general manager before starting his own consulting business in that industry. In recent years Alex researched extensively the genealogy of our families and completed a creatively illustrated book.
Alex will be remembered for his personal strength, patience with a difficult health condition, and total devotion to his family and friends. He was a loving son, brother, uncle and great uncle and will be greatly missed. Alex was a gentleman and was also known as a considerate and very caring person. He was an avid UNC fan especially following the Tar Heels in basketball and football. He enjoyed playing golf, and also spending time at the beach and holidays with the family. One of his most memorable trips was with his father and brothers to Scotland visiting the Duart Castle where the McLean clan originated. On this trip they played golf, made even more memorable when Alex sank a putt of over 100 feet at one of the Old Course at St. Andrews famous double greens. He was affectionately known by his nephews and nieces as Uncle AA and his great niece had started calling him Super Alex.

He is survived by his mother, Marie McLean Clark and his stepfather, George P. Clark of High Point, NC, his aunt Eleanor W. English of Chapel Hill, NC, and his step-aunt Betty Brannon of Greensboro, NC; his brothers Ernest C. McLean, III of Atlanta, GA, Emmett E. McLean (Catherine) of Birmingham, AL, his stepbrothers H. Douglas Phipps (Lynn) of Atlanta, GA and Allen C. Phipps (Karen) of Greensboro, NC. In addition memories will be cherished by nieces and nephews, Laura E. McLean, Kristen E. McLean, E. Carson McLean, Carter W. McLean (Jessica), A. Carlyle Phipps, Jr., Stuart A. McLean, Reid H. McLean, Matthew S. Phipps, W. McLean Phipps, and Nathan D. Phipps. He is also survived by great niece Collins G. McLean and great nephew Woodrow W. McLean.
Surviving also are cousins Lynn V. Mangino (Tom) of Asheville, NC, Elizabeth E. Sheedy (Jim) of Rock Hill, SC, Ann M. Jones (Doug) of Greensboro, NC, Laura B. Crittenden (Mark) of Littleton, NC, Stephen D. English (Lisa) of Chapel Hill, NC, H. Kimbrough Brannon (Anna) of Greensboro, NC, and other relatives and friends.

Also, his family would like to thank the staff and friends at DaVita Jacksonville South Dialysis Center, Jacksonville, FL, as well as Dr. Gil Cu, and the doctors and staff at Piedmont Transplant Institute (Atlanta, GA).
An inurnment service will be held Tuesday, February 20, 2018 at 1:00 pm at First Presbyterian Church, 617 North Elm Street, Greensboro, NC 27401 followed by visitation at 1:30pm in the Virginia Gilmer Room. There will also be visitation from 4:00pm to 6:00pm at River Landing at Sandy Ridge, 1575 John Knox Drive, Colfax, NC 27235.
