PRINCETON -- Brett J. Bashaw, 21, died suddenly Friday in Storrs, CT where he was studying at the University of Connecticut.

Born in Princeton, he was a lifelong resident. A graduate of Valley Forge Military Academy, Class of 2001 where he was a 1st Lieutenant and learned to play polo, at which he excelled. He attended Valley Forge Military College and received an associate's degree in science and business administration in 2003. He was twice awarded the Anthony Wayne Legion Guard Award and served as the Cadet Battalion executive officer. Most notable, he was captain of the Varsity Polo team for two years. He was currently attending the University of Connecticut where he was studying animal science and business. He was also a starting member of the Varsity Polo team and traveled extensively to compete.

He is survived by his mother Joyce M. Murphy of Princeton; his father Keith J. Bashaw of Monmouth Junction; two sisters and a brother-in-law, Meghan C. Bashaw of Princeton, and Donna M. Kosco and her husband Andrew of Cream Ridge; a brother, Blair Murphy of Windber, PA; two aunts and two uncles, Barbara and Charles G. Young of Philadelphia, William J. and Jane Shore of Boynton Beach, FL; also survived by nieces and nephews Drew, Ireland and Haley Kosco of Cream Ridge; and several cousins.

Funeral service will be held 1 p.m. Wednesday at the Chapel of Valley Forge Military Academy, Wayne, PA.

Calling hours will be noon Wednesday until time of service at the chapel.

Burial will be in Princeton Cemetery, Princeton.

Visitation will be held 6-9 p.m. Tuesday at The Mather-Hodge Funeral Home, 40 Vandeventer Ave., Princeton.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are encouraged to be made in Brett's name to the Valley Forge Military Academy, Department of Horsemanship Development, 1001 Eagle Road, Wayne, PA 19087 Attn: Virgil Allen.
